About I. Harvey

From Concept to Grain,
Harvey's Philosophy of Making.
I’ve worked with wood one way or another since I was nine years old, beginning with demolishing an old house to build a fort with friends. Though basic, at the time we thought we had built a castle. What started as simple childhood creations grew into a lifelong passion.
In my teens, I began pruning trees and is now a trade I’ve practiced for 50 years. This work taught me that to see sculpting in nature, you need to 'take away' to reveal the finished form. I also developed a love for felling and milling macrocarpa, crafting fences and structures on our family farm.
My approach to sculpture is self-taught, shaped by trial and error, and inspired by artists like Henry Moore. I believe art is all around us and my goal is to make it more accessible to everyone.
While I’ve previously sold work privately, I’m now excited to share it more widely. My first public exhibition was at the 2025 Kimbolton Sculpture Festival, where I was honoured to receive the Merit Sculpture Award.
